(2:23) Even though the Montagne de Reims is known for Pinot noir, the eastern villages (mostly premier cru) are esteemed for the quality of their Chardonnay. The village of Sillery is located southeast of Reims and north of the Grand Crus of Mailly, Verzenay and Verzy. Chardonnay From the Heart of Pinot-country (2:00) Panaiotis does note, however, that the northern side of the Montagne de Reims (which includes the Grand Cru villages of Mailly, Sillery, Verzy and Verzenay) produces wines with more fresh acidity that have great aging potential. Panaiotis gives a nice overview here but for anyone wanting to really dive deep into this diverse terroir, I very highly recommend Peter Liem’s Champagne, one of my 5 essential books on Champagne. This makes it hard to generalize the style of wines from its several villages–including 10 Grand Cru (Ambonnay, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Bouzy, Louvois, Mailly-Champagne, Puisieulx, Sillery, Tours-sur-Marne, Verzenay and Verzy). The topography creates a diversity of exposures in nearly all orientations (south, east, north, west, etc). This area, south of the city of Reims, has a unique horseshoe shape. (1:29) The podcast starts with a description of the Montagne de Reims region of Champagne. But the second half is a discussion with the acclaimed grower-producer Rodolphe Péters of Pierre Péters. Like the previous podcast, this episode (44:54) features a highly informative interview with Ruinart’s Frédéric Panaiotis. Ruinart’s non-vintage blanc de blancs and rose. For wine industry folks, the fee is $100 a year while for non-industry wine lovers it is $150. However, access to the forums, study guides, maps, master classes and in-depth training material on topics like blind tasting require membership. Podcasts, videos and recent articles are available to anyone for free on the website. Though many people who aspire to be Master Sommeliers join and utilize the website’s materials, GuildSomm is not a part of the Court Of Master Sommeliers. Kruth founded GuildSomm in 2009 as a nonprofit that promotes education and development opportunities for sommeliers and other wine professionals. One of the best wine podcasts, in that regard, is the GuildSomm podcast founded by Master Sommelier Geoff Kruth. Any podcast that is worth its salt needs to be backed up with solid research and commitment to accuracy. The world of wine is constantly changing and there is a lot of material to cover. But usually, it is because of a lack of credibility in the content and people producing the podcast. Sometimes it is the overall production value that steers me away–noticeable mouth breathing, weird audio jumps between loud voices and whispers, distracting background music, etc. There have been many podcasts that I’ve picked up only to unsubscribe after a couple of episodes. But not all podcasts are created equal or are worth your time. In that post I also highlight why listening to podcasts is an extremely valuable tool for wine students. To catch up on the first segment, check out Geek Notes - The Process of Champagne GuildSomm Podcast. This is the second part of our Geek Notes review of the GuildSomm podcasts with Ruinart’s chef de cave Frédéric Panaiotis.

Since their introduction to the wine industry in 2000, Frank and Liz Vezér have been on a mission for greatness. While many of these vineyards offer tours by appointment only or through special events held throughout the year such as harvest season, there are a few tasting rooms open daily for visitors who do not wish to wait. The Suisun Valley is the home of more than 25 wineries, most established during the 1990's wine boom period however, there are also a few from the mid-twentieth century that have been recently revived thanks to renewed interest in small family-owned wineries producing premium wines. The many calm days here make touring easy because there are no major hills to climb and traffic, even on weekends, moves better than in Napa. Towns like Fairfield are both historic and bustling hubs full of shops ranging from quaint antique stores to large retailers on Main Street while still maintaining their small-town charm. Panoramic views where one can easily imagine farmlands as far north as Sacramento or southward into Walnut Grove. Wide expanses with well-stocked vineyards that produce some of California's finest grapes. Nestled in the foothills of Solano County's open hillsides, this wine-rich region has miles upon acres to offer visitors. So we are excited to go and have a fresh tasting of what is in their current list so we can talk about what’s new over there.Less than an hour from Napa Valley, the Suisun Valley is often a respite for weary travelers after long days of hectic traffic and congested highways. We haven’t, for various reasons, been to Vezer recently. Maybe they don’t have the Napa name on them, but they can contend with the big boys given a few years below their belt. They age just beautifully giving you a wine that truly shines. What I mean by that is that they really benefit by being put away for a few years to mature. Everyone loved it who tried it even picky me.įor me, when talking about Vezer wines, I would describe most of their wines as “cellar wines”. We opened it on our niece’s 21st birthday celebration dinner and the wine was as memorable as the celebration itself. Rich deep tones of berry, smooth and satisfying. We recently opened one of those gift bottles from Frank, a 2006 Zinfandel that had been stored in our cellar and it was absolutely beautiful. (Yep, you guessed it a 60’s themed event where people dress up in costume and come for a great time). Vezer hosts many concerts throughout the summer months and I have consumed many, many bottles of this wine whilst enjoying bands at events like VezerStock. A great balanced wine good for barbecues, picnics, and just for easy sipping. It is a Portuguese white wine grape in keeping with the family’s background. One of the wines I love to drink when I am there on a lovely sunny afternoon is their Verdelho. The sea of fall color you see are all grape vines. Thank you, Vezer Family Vineyards for all the joy and happy memories you have brought to our lives.Ī canon protecting the vineyards at Vezer ranch. It is also special to our group of wine friends who came together as a group in this place our bond was formed there, thanks to Frank Vezer’s generosity. Some of my favorite photos that I have ever taken are on their properties. I was just starting out with my first camera and I didn’t really know what I was doing. These people know how to party! Frank invited me to their home and ranch vineyard allowing me to photograph there. They made us honorary members of their wine club and we have attended many of their events. When I was going through serious health issues, they gave us many bottles of wine to wish me better health. The owners, Frank and Liz, have been unbelievably generous to us. We have many happy memories of their summer concerts, meet-ups with friends in their gorgeous gardens, a wedding, and the friendship we have with the Vezer family and staff. There are many reasons for our fondness for this little family run place. It is a bit off the beaten track and not in Napa at all but in Suisun Valley. Vezer Family Vineyards holds a very special place in our hearts. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Pinterest Email |
